Natural vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds: What's the Difference?

The main difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds is their origin. Natural diamonds come from the earth, while lab-grown diamonds are man-made. Because of this, natural diamonds are rarer and therefore tend to come at a more premium price. Even though they differ in origin, both have the same crystal structure and near-identical optical and physical properties, meaning you can’t tell the difference between the two with the naked eye.

The 4 Cs Explained

The 4 Cs of diamonds are cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. These are used to describe the quality of a diamond. The cut of a diamond determines how precisely its facets were shaped and how much light will reflect off the stone.

Color has to do with how much “warmth” there appears to be in a white diamond. Clarity describes the internal and surface characteristics of the diamond, such as whether it contains flaws or “inclusions”. Lastly, carat measures the size of the stone by weight rather than visible diameter.

A larger carat weight does not automatically make a diamond more beautiful, and a higher clarity grade may matter less than cut in the way a stone looks when worn. The best choice is usually the balance of qualities that gives you the appearance, size, and price you want.

Diamond Jewelry Certification & Quality

A diamond grading report from an independent laboratory records the stone’s authenticity and quality. The two most widely recognized organizations for diamond certifications are the GIA and the IGI. Generally speaking, only diamonds .3 carats or larger are certified because the cost of certification for any diamond smaller than that tends to outweigh the benefit of the certification.

Before you purchase a diamond for an engagement ring, pendant, or other larger piece, you should review the report number, grading laboratory, carat weight, color, clarity, and cut information listed for the piece. If you have questions about a specific diamond or report, Milano's team can help you understand what the documentation says and how it relates to the jewelry's final appearance.

FAQ

Natural diamonds come from the earth and form naturally through geological processes, while lab diamonds are man-made in a controlled environment. They have the same basic structure and look, but because natural diamonds are harder to source, they are more valuable.

Yes, natural diamonds have a higher market price because of their origin, rarity, and their premium position in the jewelry world. However, their actual price or resale value can vary depending on the 4Cs, certification, condition, shape, market demand, and the price originally paid.

Look for an independent grading report from a recognized laboratory such as GIA or IGI, then confirm that the report details match the diamond and product description. The report should list the stone's 4 Cs, measurements, identifying number, and any treatments or growth information that apply.

The 4 Cs are cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Together, they describe how a diamond reflects light, how much color it shows, the characteristics visible inside or on its surface, and its weight, giving shoppers a consistent way to compare stones.
